Turtles As Pets

There are so many different types of pets that you could have that it is difficult to name them all. If you're looking for something that is unique and makes a great addition to your household, however, you can hardly beat what having turtles as pets can bring to you. The only thing that you are going to have a difficult time with is choosing the type of turtle that you want to own and making sure it is properly cared for. 

The fact of the matter is, there are dozens of different types of pet turtles that you could have. Four of the most popular species, however, include two that are land dwelling and two that are aquatic.

4 Popular Types Of Turtles 

The land dwelling turtles are the box turtle and mud turtle and although they have a lot of similarities, they are also different enough that they require different attention. Both the box turtle and mud turtle are going to eat the same basic diet which includes almost anything from vegetation and berries to meat.

They both prefer to live in an environment that would mimic their natural habitat, including some dry land, moist land and plenty of cover. The real difference between the two is that the box turtle is a little bit larger as an adult so it may be difficult to keep in an indoor terrarium. If you keep it outdoors, make sure that you keep it in an area where it can stay out of the direct sunlight if it chooses to do so.

Slider Turtles And Painted Turtles

Two of the most popular turtles as pets which are aquatic include the slider turtle and painted turtles. Just like their terrestrial cousins, these two will eat a variety of different foods which include vegetation and meat.

It also helps if you include a balanced turtle food to make sure that they are getting the vitamins and minerals that they require. You can pick these up at your local pet store. Both the slider and painted turtles require water as that is where they are going to spend the majority of their time.

They are still going to need some dry land, however, in order to rest and they do enjoy burrowing in the mud from time to time. Although they may start out small, they can easily grow to 10 inches or larger which makes them fairly unsuitable as an inside pet. If you have an area outside where they can enjoy sunning themselves on occasion, I'm sure they would appreciate it.
