Breeding Turtles
If you are a turtle owner, you might be
interested in learning a little bit about breeding
turtles in order to have some small ones moving around the
area. The fact of the matter is, breeding turtles is not as
easy as one might think.
One of the biggest reasons for this is because many
turtles, similar to other reptiles, have a difficult time
breeding whenever they are in captivity. That is why it is
important for you to make sure that the adult pet turtles are
comfortable enough to allow nature to take its course.
Give Your Turtles
Room
Most turtles enter into a mating season shortly after they
come out of hibernation. If you have multiple turtles in the
same pen, you'll want to make sure that you separate them at
this time of year because they can get rather aggressive
whenever their natural mating instincts take over.
Turtle Care Guide
You'll also want to make sure that once the mating occurs,
you provide the female with plenty of room in order to bury her
eggs and then carefully cover them with a protective screen so
that they do not get damaged or raided by scavengers. Make sure
that you keep the area somewhat moist during that time that the
eggs are in the ground.
Protect Your
Turtles
It takes about three months for the eggs to hatch so you're
going to need to protect that area during that time.
Once the eggs hatch, you're going to need to be protective
of the hatchlings because they are very tender and grow at a
slower pace than many other animals. They will do just fine
outside, provided they are in a covered and protected
environment but you may want to bring them indoors until they
are strong enough to fend for themselves.
If you are going to be breeding turtles regularly, you
should make sure that you are not interbreeding them as this
could cause serious problems with the young hatchlings. Just as
any other type of animal can have problems whenever they are
inbred, turtles can have problems as well. Keep your animals
marked and make sure that you provide outside breeding partners
in order to avoid these problems.
If you are having a difficult time breeding turtles, it may
be because they are not comfortable enough in captivity in
order to allow it to happen. Many animals have a difficult time
doing this and turtles are some of the most notorious in this
regard. Give them plenty of room to move around and give them
time to get comfortable in their environment. If you are able
to do these things, the breeding process will happen
naturally.
