Small Pet Turtles
If you really love turtles, you might be
interested to know that there are plenty of small pet turtles
that are available. Some of these will be very easy for you to
keep in your indoor terrarium or perhaps an area with an
aquarium handy but some of them may require a little bit more
room than that. Here is some information about about the
different breeds of small turtles that are available as pets.
You are sure to find one that would make a fantastic addition
to your own family.
Red
Eared Slider Turtles
One of the most popular types of small pet turtles that are
available are the red eared slider. These tiny little turtles,
which are often sold in sizes under 4 inches make an excellent
pet but there are some things that you should be concerned
about.
In the United States, the sale of red ear slider's and any
turtles that were underneath 4 inches in length was banned due
to an outbreak of salmonella which came from these turtles.
They are still available in many pet stores, however, and it is
perfectly legal to purchase one for "scientific research or
exhibition". Although they certainly are cute, you might want
to keep your health in mind and the possibility of salmonella
may certainly deter you from choosing this particular
species.
Box
Turtles
Box turtles are also rather popular and you may be able to
find one of these in the wild. They are found in almost every
area of the world and they tend to be found on land more than
they are found in water. If you want a great pet turtle but do
not necessarily have a ready supply of water available, this
might be a great species for you to choose.
Caring
For Turtles
Owning small pet turtles requires you to take care of them
properly and there may be a little bit that you need to learn
about how to keep them happy and healthy. Many people end up
with small pet turtles without even realizing what they need to
eat. Although it certainly will vary from species to species,
most turtles will eat a diet that consists of a combination of
green leafy vegetables, some fruit and berries and meat.
Turtle Care Guide
You should also pick up a container of turtle food that is
available at almost any pet store. This is a balanced,
nutritional supplement that should make up about 25% of your
turtles diet. Feeding them in this way will keep them healthy,
parasite free and nutritionally balanced.
Finally, you should worry about your pet turtles habitat.
Most turtles are perfectly happy if you put them in an area
that mimics their environment in the wild. Even though they
move rather slowly, they enjoy being able to move around a
little bit and they love having places to hide.
Some will enjoy the water more than others but all of them
will need a dry place in order to rest and sun themselves. Take
care of your turtle and make sure that they have everything
that they need. If you do this, they will provide you with
years of enjoyment.
