Types Of Pet
Turtles
If you enjoy having reptiles around, you
might be interested in having a pet turtle. One of the
wonderful things about owning a turtle as a pet is that you are
going to have a lot of choices as far as the types of pet
turtles that you can own. Let's take a look at a few of the
most popular and then you will be able to decide which one will
be best for you and your family.
Box
Turtles
Out of the four different types of turtles that we are going
to discuss, the box turtle is probably the most popular. One of
the reasons why this is the case is because they are found in
almost every area of the world and some people simply can't
resist picking one up and taking them home. Provided they are
well taken care of, box turtles can live for many years and
enjoy their new home as much as they would enjoy themselves in
the wild.
Turtle Care Guide
The real key is making sure that you provide them with a
habitat that mimics what they have whenever they are not in
captivity. Since a box turtle tends to be a little bit larger,
you may have to find a place to keep them outside in the warmer
months.
Mud
Turtles
Another type of land dwelling turtle that is popular are
known as mud turtles. Although they are similar to the box
turtle, they typically like things to be a little bit more
moist and really enjoy digging in the mud. They are also
slightly smaller than the box turtle so it is possible to keep
them indoors all of the time if you have a large enough
terrarium. Feed them a healthy diet which includes dark green
leafy vegetables, berries, meat and a balanced turtle food
which can be picked up at a pet store.
Painted
Turtles
Painted turtles are some of the more well-known types of pet
turtles that exist. Because of their smooth shell and colorful
markings, they are easily recognizable when compared with other
types of turtles. Many people make the mistake of thinking that
they can bring a pained turtle home and care for them inside
because of their small size. Even though they may start out at
around 4 inches long, they will grow up to 10 inches long as an
adult.
Make sure that you are prepared for the turtle to grow in
size and to take care of them before bringing them home.
Painted turtles love the water but you're also going to have to
provide them with some dry land in order to rest and warm
themselves.
Slider
Turtles
Slider turtles are another type of turtle that make a great
pet and they are also aquatic, similar to the painted turtles.
These are a bit larger than their painted turtle cousins so you
are going to need to make sure that you give them plenty of
room to move around.
Typically, you will find slider turtles resting in the water
but they do like to get onto the land in order to rest and warm
themselves as well. If you are able to provide them with a
large environment that mimics their natural home, slider
turtles will be quite happy to stick around.
